According to the AJC The Macy’s Great Tree was a great big mess Wednesday after a crane broke while lowering the Christmas tree from atop the department store at Lenox Square mall.
The huge crane apparently buckled near the top, leaving the tree dangling over the three-story glass façade along the north side of the Macy’s store. Pieces of the tree and at least one of the large ornaments fell onto an awning below.
There were no immediate reports of injuries. Lenox Square security blocked off the north parking lot of the mall, and asked news media to leave the property.
John and Jacqueline Aerts, visiting Atlanta from Brussels, were staying at the nearby JW Marriott hotel when they came across the tree drooped over the side of the store.
“I hope nobody was around and nobody got hurt,” Jacqueline Aerts told the AJC. “That’s the most important.”
She said the dangling tree was “looking sad there, with his head down.”
